MASTER OF FINE ARTS IN MUSIC 120 CREDITS
Vocal and Drama Studies is directly linked to an educational tradition that is deeply rooted within the international opera houses in which opera studios and student programmes are an integral part of the daily activity. The collaboration with Malmö Opera gives the student a unique opportunity to collect and build experience based on the various job assignments and occupational possibilities that a singer may have within a professional institution. This, in combination with a wide range of course elements at Malmö Academy of Music, ads up to an exclusive education without counterpart in Sweden.
Vocal and Drama Studies directs its attention to singers at a high artistic level and professional ability. Auditions will be held at both Malmo Academy of Music and Malmö Opera in March.
The MFA in Vocal and Drama Studies aims to train students for professional work as vocal performers within opera and musical theatre. On completion of the programme, the student shall have acquired good vocal skills and a good understanding of stage representation, including role and text analysis. Furthermore, students are to be able to perform creatively and artistically on stage, and demonstrate a good ability to appear both as a soloist and member of a choir in opera and musical theatre productions. The degree project is partly executed as an internship at Malmö Opera. The programme is offered by the Academy of Music in Malmö in collaboration with Malmö Opera.
The course design is entirely governed by the ambition to affiliate the student with a professional opera institution, so a part of the programme takes place at Malmö Opera. The link to an opera institution is essential and part of a worldwide tradition, providing students with professional experience as well as a jump start to a career as an opera singer. In addition to components in vocal studies, interpretation, mental training, basic language studies, career information, stage representation etc., the programme includes opportunities to participate in the regular performance activities of Malmö Opera in parallel with individual projects. The student selects his or her vocal instructor in consultation with the mentor of the student group and the programme management.
Specific requirements: Applicants must satisfy requirements of a very high artistic level and professional ability assessed in an entrance test. On completion of the programme, students will be awarded a degree of Master of Fine Arts in Vocal and Drama Studies.
